Pet owners beware of Bufo toad activity after rain

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA (FOX 13) -

The wet weather is bringing back all those creepy critters, and pet owners need to especially be aware of one of them: Bufo toads.

Not only are they unpleasant to look at, they can be extremely dangerous and deadly to your pet.

We've already dealt with wet roads this week and ome low-lying areas flooding. Well, now come the creepy critters that only seem to come out when it is really wet outside.

Some dogs may think the toad is a chew toy, but one bite – even a lick – and the toxic poison that the toads secrete can cause an animal to start having seizures, even die.

The Tampa Tribune reports that one dog was being treated for Bufo toad poisoning but is expected to recover.

Vets suggest keeping your pets on a leash. If they come across one of these, don't panic. They say try washing your pet's mouth out and take it to an animal clinic immediately.
