#ThrowbackThursday: Braves celebrate clinching playoffs in 1996

TAPE: SP-1330  DATE: 9/23/1996 SLUG: BRAVES CLINCH CELEBRATION TIMECODE: 26:20

I admit it.  I am one of those spoiled youngsters that the "Baby Boomers" like to complain about.  No, I never suffered through those nights at Fulton County Stadium when there were just 200 fans in the stands watching the Braves lose yet again.  My dad's stories of walking down to dugout seats because the ushers just didn't care don't seem real to me. That's because at the ripe old age of 6, I watched my favorite team go from worst to first and to Minneapolis for the World Series.  (Sidenote: Even a T-Baller could see Kent Hrbek was cheating)  Full stadiums and tomahawks have been around pretty much all of my baseball life.  I am one of those kids of that grew up in the 90's thinking that winning division championships was just something that happened every September.  Champagne celebrations, like the one seen in this week's video, came every year like Christmas or Easter.

Now I am grown up and have suffered through the Braves meltdown a couple of years ago and last season's "infield fly."  I no longer take division championships for granted.  They are hard work.  This is my first season covering my hometown team up-close and the one thing I have noticed is how locked-in this team has been.  A bunch of 20 year olds that have had one clear goal since Disney.  Their serious nature all season is why I was so thrilled to see them letting loose Sunday afternoon in Chicago.  I couldn't tell you the last time I saw Jason Heyward smile like that.  Good for him.

Too bad they had to clinch on the road.  It delayed me getting to experience the champagne shower that I've grown up watching.  Hopefully it wasn't the last time the bubbly flows this year.

Talk radio has blown up this week with criticism of Fredi Gonzalez for not bringing in Craig Kimbrel at the beginning of the 8th inning in game four against the Dodgers.
Talk radio has blown up this week with criticism of Fredi Gonzalez for not bringing in Craig Kimbrel at the beginning of the 8th inning in game four against the Dodgers.  It isn't the first time a Braves manager has been raked over the coals following a relief pitcher call that resulted in a go-ahead homer and a playoff loss.
