Body of missing Army veteran found

ATLANTA -

A sad end to the search for a missing Amry veteran who was last seen Tuesday morning leaving a Buckhead bar.

A spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol tells FOX 5 News that they spotted what they believed to be the car of 31-year-old Randal Andrew Ackerman early Thursday evening down an embankment off Mill Creek at Johnson road. Police arrived to find Ackerman dead inside his Ford Focus.

Ackerman was last seen by friends at a bar on Roswell Road in the early morning hours on Tuesday after attending an Atlanta Braves game with several friends.

"The last time I saw him, he was out talking, socializing with some of our friends," said Brunell Mondestin.

Friends said Ackerman served in the Army for more than a decade, including two tours in Iraq and an extended tour in Afghanistan. He was honorably discharged about six months ago.

"He served his country, he serves his friends," said James Jenkins. "He's just such a standup person, we can't lose him. We have to bring him home. We need him."

Ackerman's mother said that he had been staying with a friend in Sandy Springs, but now she's unable to reach him.

"The phone is either dead or destroyed or it's just off at this point," said Molly Ackerman. "There is no financial activity since before he left."

Jenkins described Ackerman as friendly and outgoing and said his disappearance is out of character.

"It's just so out of the ordinary. This is not the normal Andrew," Jenkins said.

A Facebook page originally set up to aid friends and family searching for Ackerman announced the tragic news early Friday morning.
