After months of outrage over the sex scandal at the Lakeland Police Department, it seemed like things were starting to die down.
On Thursday, though, they heated up again. One of the agency's own officers, Julio Pagan, faces criminal charges that could land him in prison for life.
Pagan is accused of forcing a woman to have sex in her bathroom while he was investigating a domestic problem there.
"Disappointment cannot even begin to describe how I feel," said LPD Chief Lisa Womack. "I am outraged, I am disgusted, fed up."
In the wake of the recent sex scandal that involves a crime analyst and nearly two dozen city workers, most at the police department, Womack has launched a major ethics campaign.
On Thursday, Pagan was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail by his fellow officers.
According to investigators Pagan had sex with the woman once, then went back to her home two more times looking for sex again. She called into the 911 center, but it took three weeks before the agency began looking into the complaint.
Womack has suspended the woman who took the call, and is looking into why the investigation did not begin sooner.
