Contact With Mother-In-Law Associates With Wellbeing, Study Says

Posted: Updated:

According to a study by Deakin University, weekly contact with one's mother and mother-in-law correlates with happiness.

The study surveyed 2,000 people about their in-laws. The reason having contact with both the mother and the mother-in-law is good is because both are a source for maternal support, according to the researchers. Maintaining a relationship with only one mother figure creates imbalance and promotes more chance of disappointment or resentment, according to the study.

The study, done in Victoria, Australia, looked at the Wellbeing Index of those with contact with their mother, those with contact with their mother and mother in law, and those who rarely had contact with either. One a scale of 1 to 100, 100 being highest, those with contact with both mothers and mother-in-law scored, on average, 78.7. Whereas those with contact with only their mother had a well being score of 74, and those with contact with neither mother nor mother-in –law had a below average score of 71.6.
