The second victim in a tandem bicycle accident on Labor Day died Saturday morning, a spokesperson for the Clearwater Police Department said.
Hilary Michalak, 27, passed away at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where she'd been hospitalized since the crash.
Investigators said Michalak and Robert Lemon, 25, were both from Largo and were riding a tandem bike on Memorial Causeway at around 6:15 a.m. when they were hit by a car and the driver didn't stop; Lemon died later that same day.
Police arrested Christopher Patrick Weed, 29, a day later and charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death and one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injuries. Investigators expect prosecutors to increase the latter charge.
Weed went to police and told them he might have been involved in the crash, but said he blacked out after leaving work and didn't remember anything that happened. Police found his car in his yard without a windshield, which they're still searching for.
"We've been kind of analyzing evidence, trying to talk to witnesses and trying to see what happened before he got in that truck and ran over those two bicyclists," said Rob Shaw, a spokesperson for the Clearwater Police Department.
Anyone with information is asked to call Clearwater detectives. No word yet on funeral arrangements fro Michalak.
