Seaside Boardwalk Blaze Prompts New Electrical Inspections

Posted: Updated:
SEASIDE PARK, N.J. -

Last week's inferno that destroyed part of a New Jersey boardwalk is now sparking new fears about electrical problems along the shore.

Investigators linked the cause of that fire in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights was accidental and caused by electrical wiring damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Now, there are new concerns that other boardwalks might be at risk of a similar fire, Fox's Lisa Evers shows us in this video report.

Volunteers from Helping Hands of New Jersey replaced some of the boardwalk in Seaside Park that was charred by last Thursday's fire.

The section of the boardwalk that was untouched by the fire was completely rebuilt after Sandy, and those businesses all have brand new wiring and electrical components.

In November 2012, the New Jersey Consumer Affairs Department advised that wiring underwater, if undamaged, did not need to be replaced. But some electrical contractors disagree and maintain any wiring that has been soaked needs to be removed. They say the risk of corrosion and fire is too great.

Because of this fire, the public safety commissioner in Wildwood said he will tour the boardwalk there with electrical inspectors to make sure none of the wiring was damaged by Sandy.

Damage from the Seaside Park fire is estimated between $5 million and $10 million.
