A man searching for scrap metal instead found a human skull and bones. Now, detectives in Polk County are trying to figure out how they got there.
Deputies say it was around 9 a.m. Tuesday when a man came across a human skull and some bones in the woods off North Wabash Avenue in Lakeland.
Detectives are processing the scene, which is in the woods east of Wabash, slightly south of Crutchfield Road.
The investigation is in the early stages and Polk Sheriff Grady Judd says detectives need the community's help.
"What we need is info from the community. Someone is missing a friend or a relative. We need to know who that friend or relative that's missing is so we can compare that with our missing person files," Judd said.
The bones appear to be those of an adult, deputies say. They will be taken to the Medical Examiner's Office to hopefully identify the deceased person and determine his or her cause of death.
Editor's note: Initial details about the scene released by PCSO have been removed at the request of investigators.
