Saturday morning a World War II veteran from Pinellas County was awarded nine military metals for his service in the Navy.
94-year old Mcpherson Plecker joined the Navy 72 years ago. Plecker survived four years as a prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp, and was wounded in 1940 when the Japanese bombed Wake Island.
On Saturday he received the Purple Heart, the American Defense Service Medal, the Prisoner of War medal, and six others.
"It's been so many years didn't believe I'd ever get them and I'm very thankful I did get them. I never had an idea it would be like this, it's outstanding people do care," Plecker said.
Plecker almost missed out on this honor because the military had lost his records.
When his hospice care team at Suncoast Hospice found out about his service, they contacted the Navy, which quickly worked to make things right.
Plecker says he's touched that the people around him worked so hard to make sure he got formal recognition for his service.
