Two men are in jail and a third is lucky to be home safe after an armed abduction and attempted burglary plot unraveled overnight, but police say the Verizon store manager who was "shoved" into a trunk is traumatized.
The frightening ordeal began when the 37-year-old victim's wife called police to say her husband had been abducted at gunpoint from their driveway in Loretto, Minn., at about 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
"The dogs started barking and there was a Dodge Charger pulled up right in the middle of our driveway," Chris Hewitt, a neighbor of the victim, told FOX 9 News.
Hewitt heard several car doors slam shut outside his home, but said he had no idea what was happening until his neighbor's wife came running over.
"She didn't think she was seeing her husband again," Hewitt recalled.
The victim's wife told police she heard a scuffle and saw a red car speed away. Between her account and Hewitt's, police had enough to lead them to the suspects' vehicle about a mile away at near Highway 55 and Pioneer Trail.
Once police pulled over the car, the two suspects fled on foot -- but police made another important discovery.
"The officer heard someone pounding from inside the trunk," Medina Police Chief Edgar Belland said. "The trunk was opened and the victim, a 37-year-old male, was inside."
Police say the suspects had zip-tied the victim's hands, but the man -- identified by neighbors as Javier Velasco -- was not physically harmed.
"Just the shock of being kidnapped in your driveway and thrown in a trunk -- they're traumatized," Belland said.
Investigators believe the abductors were attempting to take the keys from the victim in order to burglarize the Verizon store he manages in Minneapolis after following him home.
After searching the area with K-9 units and the Minnesota State Patrol's helicopter, officers located 29-year-old Ronald Jermain Jackson and 31-year-old William Charles Graham just after midnight. Both were arrested and remain in the Hennepin County Jail.
Both men been convicted of crimes, including theft, multiple times.
