Water is a precious resource and conservation is important. That's why the city of Tampa was willing to pay heavy users to save water each month.
Earlier this year, the city launched the "Build Your Own Rebate" program, a first of its kind. High-use customers -- those using over 15,000 gallons a month -- got to tell the city how much they were going to slash their usage, and if they met the goal, they got paid.

It was voluntary program and a few dozen people signed up. Most rebates were between $150 and $500. The total cost of the program was $6,900. The city says the money was well spent because it helped teach conservation.
