Man awaiting kidney gets help with wedding

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -

Thanks to a generous FOX 5 viewer, a Douglasville man awaiting a new kidney is having easier time planning his wedding.

As FOX 5's Chris Shaw reported this weekend, Thomas Smith is battling health issues and has struggled to pay for his upcoming wedding.

After seeing the story, Brides Atlanta Owner Tiffany Stovall said she'd donate a wedding dress, shoes and veil for Smiths' bride-to-be, Rebecca Bridwell. Smith's tuxedo will also be included.

As she tried on dresses for her dream day, Bridwell said it was great to have someone help her and her fiancée as they deal with the emotional and financial challenges of waiting for a kidney.

"It's just, you know, it brings us closer for that day and just takes the stress off," Bridwell said. "It's a huge load and it's more than we can ever imagine, and I'm just so thankful for this day and it's getting so close and so real and I'm just so thankful for everybody who has helped make this day come true for me."

Stovall's brother, Shane, owns Atlanta West Jewelry in Douglasville. He is going to donate a wedding band that matches Bridwell's engagement ring.

"The cost of everything involved is just overwhelming and this is one day in your life that you will always remember and you want to hold to your heart in any way that Shane and I both can help this couple, we just feel like, if you give a blessing you will get blessed," said Stovall.

The couple will exchange vows on Oct. 27 at Heritage Baptist Church.

Stovall and her brother are challenging others in the community to step up and help the two have a wedding to remember.
