Lockdown lifted after shootout near Atlanta elementary school

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A lockdown at a southwest Atlanta elementary school has been lifted following a shootout at a nearby apartment complex.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Summerdale Commons apartments in the 2600 block of Old Hapeville Road.

Police said that officers responding to a report of a robbery saw a shootout across from Cleveland Avenue Elementary School.

Atlanta Police spokesperson Sgt. Greg Lyon tells FOX 5 News that officers were OK, but two suspects were shot. It was not clear who shot the suspects.

Atlanta Public School officials say the elementary school was placed on lockdown for more than an hour because the crime scene extended to the entrance of the school.

Students said they were huddled in classrooms as they hid from possible danger.

Officials said that most students were dismissed at their normal time. Students who live at the apartment complex were held for a time as police continued to investigate.

Police roped off a portion of the apartment complex, including the entrance, as part of their crime scene investigation. That area was released from lockdown just after 3 p.m.

No names have been released.
