9/11 remembrance ceremonies take place across SE Mich.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Ceremonies remembering the 9/11 terrorist attacks are taking place Wednesday in cities across Michigan.

Earlier, Grosse Pointe North High School students placed 2,977 American flags into the ground to remember the victims of Sept. 11, 2001.

The Michigan House of Representatives is inviting first responders and their families to the state Capitol for an afternoon ceremony. Seven Michigan military members and first responders who died in the line of duty last year will be honored.

The names of slain West Bloomfield Township police officer Pat O'Rourke and Westland firefighter Brian Woehlke also will be unveiled Wednesday morning on the Michigan Fallen Heroes memorial wall in Pontiac.

Day of Service: A call to action
The Michigan Community Service Commission reminds us that September 11, 2013 is a day to honor the men and women who gave their lives during the 9-11 terror attacks.

September 11, known as the National day of Service, allows the public to honor victims and responders of 9-11 by working together to improve our world. Everyone is encouraged and invited to serve their communities.

The day of service, began through the efforts of 9-11 victim's families and support groups. The day was officially recognized after the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in April 2009.

Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial Service
The Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial is hosting the 11th annual Fallen Heroes Ceremony on Wednesday, September 11, at 11 a.m., in Pontiac, Mich.

The memorial site is located at 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., near Bldg. 38E. During the ceremony the names of Michigan police officers and firefighters, who have lost their lives, will be added to the memorial site's granite wall and unveiled to the public.

9/11 Patriot Day Ceremony in Downtown Farmington
The American Legion Groves-Walker Post #346 of Farmington will join the cities of Farmington and Farming Hills to host the annual 9-11 Patriot Day Ceremony.

The ceremony remembers the victims and the courageous first responders who lost their lives during the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The event, led by American Legion Commander Cliff Luzon, will take place on Wednesday, September 11, at 6 p.m., at the Walter Sundquist Pavilion at Riley Park in Farmington, MI.

Spirit of America Blood drive
Michigan Blood is once again teaming up with the Michigan International Speedway for the 2013 Spirit of America Blood Drive.

The blood drive will take place on Wednesday, September 11, at the Michigan International Speedway racetrack in Brooklyn, Mich.

The annual blood drive has accured more than 8,876 pints of blood since its start in 2002, helping save more than 26,688 lives.

All donors must be at least 17 years old. You must be at least 110 pounds and pass a health screening. New donors are welcome. Valid ID is required.

9/11 Day of Remberance Golf Outing
The Fifth Annual Day of Remembrance Golf Outing is Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at the Moose Ridge Golf Course in South Lyon, MI.

The event is hosted by the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund. Proceeds will help support the brave men and women of the Armed Forces.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. Tickets cost $150 and include: 18-holes with cart, driving range & balls, buffet dinner, gifts and prizes.

Special guests include: News Talk 760's, Frank Beckmann and a live auction provided by the Michigan Auctioneers Association.

Sterling Heights patriot tribute
The City of Sterling Heights will host a Patriot Ceremony, in remembrance of 9-11, to pay tribute to the first responders.

The ceremony will take place on September 11, 2013 at 8:40 a.m., at the Sterling Heights Fire Station No.1.

The annual event honors those who were killed or injured during the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Fire Chief Chris Martin alongside Chief of police Michael Reese and Fire Chaplain Ray Ahonen will begin the memorial with a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time of the first attack on the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony. Flags will be flown at half-mast throughout the day.
