Two sites still under consideration for Falcons stadium

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

As talks about the site for a new Atlanta Falcons stadium get down to the wire, sources tell FOX 5 that two locations are still under consideration for the billion dollar facility.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank has set a deadline for action by the end of the week. Those familiar with the discussions say the negotiations have intensified.

In order for the stadium to be built on the preferred south site, two church congregations must agree to sell their property. One of those churches – Friendship Baptist – has formally agreed to terms in writing. The second church, Mt. Vernon Baptist, has an important vote coming up in the next few days, according to FOX 5's Morse Diggs.

The other site, which located on the north side, would require a .75 mile walk from public transportation to the stadium.

Falcons' leadership has instructed their architect to work on drawings for both sites.

"We want both of the churches to do what is in their best interests and not in our best interests," Blank said.  "They do the right thing for themselves, we will be fine. If that means it's going north, we are absolutely fine with that. That was actually our preferred site for the first couple of years."

Atlanta City Councilmember Ivory Young and others have said that the north site wouldn't be good for neighborhoods, fans or traffic.

The Falcons would like the stadium to be ready in time for the start of the 2017 season.
