Middleton High student arrested for bringing gun to school

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A Middleton High School 10th grader was arrested today for bringing a gun to school.

According to the Tampa Police Department, an officer got a tip that the student had the gun in his backpack.

He pulled the student from class, checked the bag and found the gun.

The 16-year-old said he didn't plan to harm anyone. He said he needed the gun for protection in his neighborhood, according to TPD.

Where and how he got the gun is under investigation

The teen was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. He is charged with carrying a concealed weapon on school grounds, which is a felony.

The school was briefly on lock down during the investigation.

Police say the student will be transferred to an alternative school.
