A standoff in Hernando County ended Tuesday afternoon when the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Hernando County sheriff said.
A SWAT team surrounded the home on Siam Drive in Spring Hill where another person was shot earlier, deputies said.
A neighbor told FOX 13 that he had heard three gunshots, then got a call from a relative of his neighbor, William Stelling.
"I ran outside, and we saw Bill being taken out of the house, put on a stretcher and into an ambulance," Matt McCabe said.
McCabe said Stelling was conscious and talking as he was taken away, but described the wounds as "serious." Stelling was flown from the scene in a helicopter, deputies said, and was in stable condition.
Nearby schools were in lockdown and the neighborhood was evacuated while deputies surrounded the home.
"We went to Wal-Mart, came back, and now we're just hanging around until we can go home," McCabe continued. "As far as the cops, they're doing a great job. They got us out of here so no one gets hurt."
The sheriff's office identified the suspect as Thomas Brocato, 58.
McCabe said Brocato was known to argue with others in the neighborhood.
"After he moved in, he caused nothing but troubles," he added.
