Drivers advised to stay in disabled vehicles on highways

ATLANTA -

Authorities are reminding drivers to stay in their vehicles if they become disabled on the interstate.

A driver was killed early Friday on Interstate 285 after being struck when he stepped out of his stalled car, College Park police said.

Elnora Redd, who drives one of Georgia's more than 100 H.E.R.O. units, says that drivers should stay in their disabled vehicles.

"Stay in your vehicle and call 511 and we'll be there -- lights and sirens -- we'll hurry to get to you and get you out, and get you over to the shoulder safely," said Redd.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Chris Stallings agrees, and has an additional warning for drivers who are tempted to get out of their cars anyway.

"The likelihood of you surviving an impact from a passing vehicle while you are outside of our car, those chances are very slim," Stallings said.

Cpl. Stallings says if your vehicle does stall or run out of fuel, pull off the road as far as possible onto the right shoulder.

"Our shoulders of the roadway aren't extremely wide for the paved portion, but if there's grass, that grass is also available to a stranded motorist to get completely out of the roadway," Stallings staid.

Both the trooper and hero operator say the most important thing to remember is to never get out of your disabled car.

H.E.R.O. units are accessible 24 hours a day by dialing 511.
