Philly Dropping Appeal Of Firefighters' Arbitration Award

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Mayor Michael Nutter says Philadelphia is dropping its appeal of a ruling that it pay tens of millions of dollars to city firefighters.

In 2010, an arbitration panel awarded the contract to the firefighters that the city says would have cost $160 million – money the city says it did not have.

After a lengthy battle, the mayor says the city can now afford to cover the cost of the award and will pay it.

The mayor says each firefighter will now receive a retroactive paycheck for about $5,000.

"We are grateful that the city has elected to drop appeal of our 2009 binding arbitration award. We are hope this is first step for all of the city unions to have contracts in place," said Joe Schulle, president of the firefighters' union.
