TAMPA (FOX 13) -

He was outraged. He was on a rampage.

That's what one witness said of 24-year-old Charlie Christopher Bates, a man accused of a violent crime spree north of USF's Tampa campus.

Saisuweis Syed said he was at a birthday party inside the Oaks Apartments when Bates barged in. There were about 25 USF grad students, and Syed said Bates told them to file into a bedroom.

He was armed.

Syed said he thought it was a prank, but his heart quickly sank.

"I was very sure that some of us in the room were going to die," Syed said. "I was sure, because the way he was furious because we called 911. I thought he was going to kill one, maybe three of us."

Syed said Bates demanded all of them give up their cell phones, but someone had managed to call 911.

"The way he was pointing the gun at all of us – he was making us terrified," Syed said.

Syed said Bates robbed them of all their money, and then left the apartment. He also said he fired gunshots at a neighbor in his cell phone, but he was unharmed.

Bates was later tracked down Friday by authorities in Hillsborough County. He was shot several times after a pursuit on U.S. 301.
