Girl struck by baseball continues to recover

PALMETTO, Ga. -

A girl seriously injured after being struck by a baseball is continuing to recover.

Summer Johnson received an outpouring of support from FOX 5 viewers after we first aired her story.

The 12-year-old Palmetto girl was in a California ballpark to support her brother, Kel, who was trying out for Team USA. A line drive foul traveling about 95 miles per hour struck Summer in the face.

"Tommy Lasorda, who was the first guy to get to her after it happened, he has said that it was the worst thing he has ever seen," said Rhonda Johnson, Summer's mother.

Summer said that the reaction of those nearby after the accident frightened her.

"I remember pretty much everything that was happening right when I got hit," Summer said.  "Looking around and everybody faces were making me more scared. But then Kel calmed me down and mom was pacing back and forth on the phone with 911. And Tommy Lasorda was standing there behind me talking to me and saying, ‘It's going to be OK,' and I was like, ‘Yeah.'"

Johnson was in intensive care for four days while family, friends and church members prayed for healing.

Last week, Summer underwent reconstructive surgery.

"She had a metal plate put in right under her eye and some of the bones rebuilt that were broken, of course she had the frontal bone fractured, the temporal bone was broken and three breaks under here and the ethmoid bone was shattered," said Rhonda Johnson.

Doctors say her eye took the force of the hit. Her vision was damaged and doctors aren't sure if it'll ever fully return. Summer did say it's getting better.

Major League scouts that saw Summer's injury have showered her with phones, gifts and phone calls, but the gift of prayer has meant the most to the family.

"I really think it has helped because everybody has just been calling us and saying, ‘We are praying for you,' and I'm like, ‘Thank you,'" said Summer Johnson.

Her family has set up a fund to help offset the cost of the reconstructive surgeries she now faces. Donations can be made at summerleighjohnson.com.
