Abandoned houses line street near school, safety patrols needed

Posted: Updated:

Students at West Side Academy High School have made it safely through the first few days of school now, but some feel they are pressing their luck.

Near the school is a string of five abandoned homes along Vinewood and Hancock. Students tell Fox 2's Amy Lange they don't feel safe.

A spokesman for Mayor Dave Bing is checking on the demolition of these dangerous eyesores.

From the street, you can see a crosshair on the back wall of one of the homes - in it, three bullet holes. One student also tell us he's been chased by a number of dogs around the area.

Until this is taken care of, remind your children to always walk in groups and if you live in the area, leave your porch light on. You can also join a volunteer patrol group.
To do so, contact Detroit Public Schools at 313-748-6005.
