Cancer Survivor Finishes Cross Country Fundraising Bike Ride

Posted: Updated:

Riding a bicycle across the country is no easy feat. But one man in Maryland was determined to do it. He said he had an important reason to take on the task.

Patiently waiting along the Capital City Docks. Fred Vlchek's family haven't seen him in more than a month.

"It's a gorgeous day in Annapolis!" says Fred Vlchek as the last leg of his journey comes to a stop.

"Hey, welcome back, my friend!" his family and fans shouted to him, a triumphant hello, after Vlchek's cross-country bike ride.

"It's good to see him back home and happy and in one piece," says Dawn Vlchek.

"It mimicked my whole journey through cancer, and, specifically, through chemotherapy," says Fred Vlchek. Fred's trip was no mid-life crisis. It was a my-life-almost-ended crisis.

"I'm a six-year cancer survivor," says Fred Vlchek.

He raised $16,000 for the journey, and got another $8,000 from Livestrong, the charity that disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor, started.

"His legacy is not going to be the seven yellow jerseys from the Tour de France," reflects Fred Vlchek.

"It's such common ground when you've been diagnosed with any kind of cancer," says Angela Perez, who supports Fred.

"How many miles were you averaging per day?" someone asked Fred.

"About 88," he replied.

It was his first fundraiser for his start-up charity, Fred's Difference. He hopes that the money he raises will pay for chemotherapy treatments for those down on their luck.

"I saw so many men, specifically, have to make that choice between putting food on the table for their family or get treatment," says Fred Vlchek.

"Do I think he's crazy? No. I think it's crazy if he doesn't do it again," remarks Perez.
