Police: Sarasota mother kills toddler, self

Posted: Updated:

A 17-month-old baby and her mother were killed Sunday morning in what Sarasota Police described as a murder-suicide.

Investigators said Sarah Harnish, 35, shot her daughter in a home on Bradenton Road before turning the gun on herself, and the father heard it all happen.

"Pretty tragic situation out here in Sarasota this morning," said Genevieve Judge, spokesperson for the Sarasota Police Department. "At about 9:45 the father of the child came home from a scooter ride and heard gunshots and called 911 immediately."

Police said the baby died at the hospital.

Neighbors said they never saw this coming; one community member said the family held a barbeque a couple days ago.

"I can't imagine what kind of problems there could have been," said Dinie Hens, who lives down the street. "I see clothes hanging on the line and I just don't understand what could have happened."

Detectives are looking into what led to the shooting and haven't yet said whether Harnish and the baby's father were married.

Neighbors, however, said this kind of crime is unthinkable no matter how bad things seem.

"Oh my gosh. That is just -- it's even more shocking," said Kari Kizman, a neighbor was momentarily at a loss for words. "As far as taking your own life and your child's life, there is help out there for people that need the help. Just ask and people will help."
