New Exotic Superberries Trending

Posted: Updated:

Exotic superberries are all the rage, like the acai that grows on palm trees in the lush greenery of the Amazon. But that's old news.

Now there are some new exotic superberries that are getting a lot of buzz, like the aronia berry. And it is grown right here in the United States.

"The aronia berry," says Jason, a store owner. "carries very potent antioxidant qualities."

"This berry is very popular because it has twice the antioxidants as wild blueberries," adds nutritionist Elizabeth DeRobertis. "and antioxidants help us to fight off free radicals which can cause chronic diseases."

Since aronia berries are extremely tart, people usually buy them frozen or in concentrated form to mix in smoothies.

Jason Bander, the general manager of "Life Thyme Market," a health food store in Manhattan, says that another up and coming exotic superberry is the goji. It comes from a shrub native to China.

"Goji berries remain to be extraordinarily popular because they can be eaten in a dried form," says Jason.

Nutritionist Elizabeth DeRobertis says that while exotic fresh berries have benefits, the US government doesn't allow for all of them to be imported whole. That's why you usually see berries like acai and goji in extracts, supplements or dried.

The long term research on antioxidants shows that in a supplement form, they are not as effective as when you eat a whole fruit, so it's much better to eat a whole piece of fruit and the whole berry form rather than buy it in a liquid or a pill form," says Elizabeth.

And she says that it doesn't necessarily have to be exotic to be a carrier of powerful antioxidant punch.

"Our normal everyday strawberries, blueberries, raspberries are great," says Elizabeth.

"Why not? People sit and eat potato chips. I'd rather sit and eat berries," says a man on the street.
