Sarah Murnaghan Recovering At Home

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. -

"How's it feel to be home?" asks Janet. "Good," responds Sarah.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

These were a couple of heartwarming words from the girl who inspired a nation.

This is from a new video of 11-year-old Sarah Murnaghan settling in at her Newtown Square home, playing with her siblings after an agonizing six month stay at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Sarah soldiered through two lung transplant surgeries and related treatments in a battle against cystic fibrosis.

"We're very proud of what Sarah's accomplished. She's been so strong. She's really done so much to get herself here," says Fran Murnaghan, Sarah's father. "She's doing fantastic but this is really the beginning of the next chapter."

FOX 29 cameras were rolling when Sarah came home from CHOP Tuesday by ambulance. She had family and friends rejoicing as she was carried into the house.

Later in the day, she gave a gentle wave from her porch as she sat with her family. It was a reunion after an especially tough summer with her parents lobbying Washington to change organ donor rules, so she could get an adult set of lungs to save her life.

"We knew we had very little time and we knew that the system was up against us," says Janet.

The rule was suspended and she got that needed transplant, but the first lungs failed, demanding a second procedure in the dark days of June.

"The whole month of June was hard and she was mostly sedated and paralyzed all of June," says Janet Murnaghan, Sarah's mother.

The family says she's made great progress healing from operations, but the recovery will continue at home, with frequent trips to therapy sessions.

"She's off of oxygen. So what's happening now is just building up her muscles again," says Fran.

Still a dream has come true. Sarah is alive and home. And that means more dreams to be achieved.

"We're looking forward to Sarah having a nice long life and getting married, having a family, doing everything that we dream for our other kids," says Janet.

Sarah's mom says she's looking forward to playing with her friends, singing and playing soccer. She'll basically enjoy the normal life of an 11-year-old.

She will also be starting school the week of September 9th as well, but will be taught at home.
