Parents React To VMA Miley Cyrus Performance

Posted: Updated:

If Miley Cyrus didn't shed her "Disney" image before, her performance on MTV's Video Music Awards certainly put her teeny-bopper past behind her.

It's hard to pick just one moment from Miley Cyrus' VMA performance last night that was particularly shocking, there were quite a few. From her stripping down to a flesh-colored bikini to her provocative dance moves, the former Disney star made it very clear to the world that she's not a child anymore.

"She just has to make a difference from being Disney to being Miss Edgy. She really goes way over the line. She doesn't have to do that," says Holly James, who's disappointed with Miley.

"She's disgraceful, a joke," says Nicole Fontana, a parent. "It's a joke they even put that on."

MTV's Video Music Awards are known for creating controversy. However, parents we talked to say that Cyrus crossed the line and kept going.

"I was embarrassed for my kids watching the show, I should've known better rather than to turn that on with my kids in the room," says Donna Mackey.

Imagine sitting in the audience. A photo of Will Smith and his family went viral, but it turns out the picture was actually their reaction to Lady Gaga's performance, which included an equally skimpy outfit. Regardless, some say that the message young girls are getting is wrong.

"I just think girls going to follow in her footsteps because they see her on Disney channel. They see what she's doing. Not right thing to do," says Erin West.

"There's plenty of musicians who don't have to wear underwear and act like that on stage. I don't know what purpose of that is," says Donna Mackey.
