For three Tampa teenagers, the best sci-fi adventure wasn't in a movie theater this summer, it was in their own living rooms.
In the end, their summer-long project could get them closer to Hollywood.
High school sophomores Sean Carr, Ross Edwards, and R.J. Walters created their own intergalactic world right here on Earth.
"Three things we had to do were to design a rover, design a planet, and make the movie," said Sean Carr, who is 14 years old.
Just like Steven Spielberg did when he was a kid.
The three teens, all home-schooled, decided to enter a a contest based on the movie "After Earth" starring Will Smith and his son Jaden.
If you didn't see it, the science fiction adventure is about Earth being destroyed by climate change.
"I enjoyed it a lot. It was really fun to just to be with my friends and build robots, which is something that I really like to do," team member Ross Edwards said.
The boys' three-part project was to build a robot, configure a new planet that would support human life, and then make a video about it.
"It was, you know, something instead of sitting around doing things that aren't productive," Sean said. "It kind of felt nice to do something all summer that ended with something that we have that I'm personally very proud of."
R.J. took the lead in building and programing "Rover" the robot.
"I like robotics, I like to learn about programming and building robots," R.J. said.
The boys literally took on the world with their summer project, competing against international students.
And the early results are fantastic: They made it to the top ten.
"I just think that it is amazing that we got that we got this far. Its just really cool." Ross said.
"We all worked we all had our strong points," Sean said. "I just felt like we grew a lot as friends and as a team."
Friends working together and learning real-life applications to use in the future.
The boys are anxiously awaiting the final results. Beyond the experience, the winner of the contest will get a personally signed autographed photo of Will and Jaden Smith and a copy of the movie "After Earth."
