Carjackers Steal Car With Radioactive Medical Waste Inside

Posted: Updated:

Arnsie Riley is thankful her son Sylvester Porter is  still alive.

" He could have been killed," she exclaimed.

The 48-year-old man was carjacked at gunpoint in front of his Darby Borough  home  on the 200 block of Mill. Police now looking for two armed men in who pulled up in a  Black PontiacBonniville then held Porter at gunpoint.

"They pull  up and one puts a gun to his  head and says don't move. Another guy jumps in the car and takes off."

The violent episode unfolded  around 1:30 Friday afternoon as Porter was headed into his house after work at Cardinal Health Nuclear.

"This has become sad! A sad world.  You can't go to
work and leave without  something happening,  so it's upsetting to the  whole family."

Porter's company car--a white Toyota Matrix similar to this one was stolen. Inside --containers like this full of radio active medical waste. The Philadelphia  Police Department's Homeland Security  unit called in because of the potential hazard. At this hour authorities say it's no longer a threat.

"The two radioactive sources we believe are inert," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joseph Sullivan. Fluorine 18 has a half life of two  hours and Technetium 99 has a
half life of six hours.

An  air and ground search that included Homeland Security went on late into
the evening after a possible sighting of the stolen Toyota off Main Street.

The lead didn't pan out. At one time police were able to track the stolen Toyota for a while until it was thrown out in the 6300 block of Glenmore Ave.

The license plate of the stolen Toyota is PA JFP 5051.
