Robbers swarm Sweetbay employees at closing time

Posted: Updated:

A Plant City Sweetbay store was ransacked by robbers on Tuesday. Police say four masked men, dressed as grocery store employees, forced their way inside the store as crews were closing up shop.

Plant City Police say the incident happened just after midnight, at the Sweetbay located on W. Alexander Street. Investigators say the suspects were wearing Sweetbay polo shirts. They were also wearing gloves and masks to conceal their identities.

Police say the suspects corralled employees in a group and helped them captive as they ransacked the store for money and cigarettes. Investigators say they also cracked into the store's safe and took off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Sweetbay Supermarket's headquarters in Tampa is currently working with police.

"Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our associates and customers. We are currently working with the appropriate authorities on this matter," said Sweetbay Supermarket spokesperson Nicole Lebeau.

Plant City Police are still searching for the four suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call their Major Crimes Unit at 813-757-9200.
