On Thursday afternoon, storms threatened just about every Bay area county.

Crews from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue were called to Mintz Elementary School in Brandon in response to a reported lightning strike.

They said fire broke out in the roof above a classroom, possibly because of lightning. Four classrooms suffered water damage.

Fortunately, the building was not occupied by students at the time.

In Pasco County, a road sustained major damage when a large section of ground near it fell away. That happened along Jessamine Road in Dade City.

The sheriff's office says a pipe burst underneath Jessamine Road near the intersection of Jim Denney Road. The heavy rainfall then washed out a 30-foot wide, 15-foot deep hole underneath the asphalt.

"This water came up, overtook the road, and then it went down to its natural flow within an hour," Pasco County Sheriff's Deputy Gennis Folsom said Thursday night.

A portion of Jessamine Road was shut down to all but local traffic until crews could make necessary repairs. On Friday, SkyFOX flew over the scene, with crews out trying to repair the road.

In Hernando County, so many roads were closed or impassable, the sheriff's office told residents to stay inside.

"Travel is not recommended. Please remain at home unless it is absolutely necessary that you leave," the sheriff's office said in a media release.

The National Weather Service tweeted that 4" to 6" of rainfall fell in sections of Pasco and Hernando counties, and more is on the way Friday.

Sandbags are available at the Brooksville Fire Department, the Pasco County Public Works Complex, the Land O' Lakes Recreation Complex, and the San Antonio C-Barn.
