A fire tore through an empty school bus in Sarasota County, causing delays on northbound I-75.
It happened late Wednesday morning near the State Road 681 crossing, which is east of Venice. The bus, which was equipped with a special wheelchair lift, was being transferred to Oak Park School in advance of an upcoming field trip.
But the driver pulled over after smelling smoke, and not long after, the bus was consumed in flames.
No children were on board. The driver and an aide had gotten off before the fire broke out.
The northbound lanes of the interstate were closed while firefighters from Sarasota and Nokomis put out the blaze. The interstate reopened after about an hour.
There were no reported injuries.
