FDA: Problems with many vitamin and supplement companies

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Americans should have serious concerns about what is really in their vitamins and supplements, according to Dr. Ken Spaeth, the chief of occupational and environmental medicine for North Shore LIJ Health System.

He said he has seen cases of heavy metals and PCBs in supplements. He is not surprised by a recent Newsday report that indicated that 70 percent of all supplement companies have violated the FDA's manufacturing regulations.

Nationwide, 16 recalls of products have been issued in the last two months alone, including for a Long Island-based company and its manufacturer that were found to have produced products containing anabolic steroids. Dr. Spaeth treated more than 20 people who became ill in that case.

Supplements are classified as food and aren't regulated the same way that pharmaceutical products are. Any changes would have to come from the Congress. That could bring major push back from the industry.

By some estimates vitamin sales generate more than $28 billion a year.

The New York Health Department has confirmed that a viral-based severe respiratory illness has sickened several children in the state. New York is the latest state to confirm cases of sickness caused by enterovirus EV-D68. More than a dozen children are sick, officials said. The CDC has said this unusually severe outbreak has caused serious breathing problems.
