Dating Studies Show Surprising Attractiveness Of Frugality

Posted: Updated:

Three studies show that the ability to have self-control over money is seen as more attractive than being willing to spend money.

The most recent study comes from the Ross School of Business in University of Michigan. According to the study of 282 adults, people who chronically save are viewed as more romantically attractive. According to the research, people who save are perceived to have more self-control, which encourages other healthy behaviors like exercise and healthy diets. According to the study, savers are also regarded as more physically attractive. The one caveat that the study showed was that spenders were preferred in the short term when the person surveyed or the situation required high need for stimulation.

The second study comes from the site Coupon Cabin. In this study of 2,346 people, 26% of US adults report that they have used a coupon on their first date. And even more importantly, about 26% said that they would have a positive reaction if their date used a coupon to help pay for the first date and 73% said they would go on another date if their date used a coupon. The study explains these findings partially on the increasingly tight finances of Americas during current times of recession.

There is also a study by the New York Times from last year that showed that some adults regard a good credit score as a prerequisite for a good date.
