The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office will decide whether a Riverview woman will be charged in the shooting death of a man Saturday. Hillsborough sheriff's detectives say Vickie Rock intervened when she heard a woman being severely beaten in a neighboring apartment at the Grand Oaks Apartment complex in Brandon. Rock was visiting her boyfriend.
She and a lot of neighbors heard the couple fight at around 6 a.m. Saturday.
"I heard a lady screaming 'he's killing me, he's killing me,'" neighbor Nathaniel Taylor told FOX 13.
Rock was upstairs at her boyfriend's apartment when they first heard the commotion. Rock's boyfriend gave her his gun and she went downstairs to help.
"They had called 911 and they were waiting for the police to get here, but it escalated so fast that she decided she couldn't wait for the police anymore," said neighbor Kathy Butler, who is friend's with the woman who was being attacked.
Investigators say Rock saw Daniel Robertson beating his girlfriend with something metal and threatening to kill her. Butler thinks he would have, had Rock not killed him first.
"I honestly believe that Dan would've killed her," Butler said.
Rock confronted Robertson and warned him she had a gun. But detectives say he then attacked her also and wouldn't stop. Butler says they fought over the gun. Neighbors heard three to four shots and Robertson was dead.
"To me, she's a hero," said Butler. "She did something most of us would be scared to death to do and that's take on a man that's actually trying to hurt somebody."
Robertson's girlfriend was much too upset to talk to FOX 13 Monday, but Butler says she was always afraid her friend and neighbor would be the one to die.
"No, it wasn't the first time," Butler said.
Butler adds it's a sad situation, but she's thankful her friend is alive because of another woman's courage.
"She did what a lot of us say we would do," said Butler. "But whether we'd actually do it or not, I don't know."
As of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed against Rock.
