Deputies: Man on bath salts ran naked through neighborhood

It may have been in the middle of the night, but when Devon Gilkey decided to take a stroll down Omaha Street in Hudson, he was hard to miss.

"He was walking north bound on Omaha with not a stitch of clothes on, nothing. And talking on this make-believe cell phone," said Pat Hendricks.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco says Gilkey's "birthday-suit strut" early Sunday morning was thanks to one thing:

"At that time, he admitted that he was using 'spice,' " Nocco said, referring to a synthetic drug that has been banned in many areas.

Detectives say he also told them he was on bath salts.

Hendricks says that makes sense, because Gilkey sure wasn't making any.

"His hands were flying in the air, and he was just like back-and-forth between the houses, he had no idea he didn't have clothes on," said Hendricks. "He says, 'how much more clothes do you want me to put on?' But he didn't have anything on, not even a pair of shoes."

Hendricks called 911. When deputies arrived, they chased Gilkey to the Rick Bekman's backyard, where he was arrested after hiding in a tree.

"Just as I opened my front door here, he came walking out here and they had him handcuffed," Bekman said, adding he didn't realize Gilkey's lack of clothing at first.

"I couldn't tell if he was totally naked, but I did notice nothing up here, you know," Bekman said.

Gilkey was arrested and charged with loitering and indecent exposure. While no one was injured during the incident, Sheriff Nocco says this is no joke, especially when you consider the unpredictable effects of synthetic drugs.

"It may be humorous for the fact that somebody was running around the street naked. However, the next time, it could be somebody pulling a gun out and shooting people," Nocco said.
