People who live in the Grand Oaks Apartments on Sherwood Lane in Brandon got quite the wake-up call Saturday morning.
"At 6 am, heard a lady screaming he's killing me, he's killing me and then three or four shots fired," said Nathaniel Taylor.
Investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office say 56 year old Daniel Robertson was on the other end of those gun shots and died at the scene.
It appears this all started with domestic violence.
"Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning a violent altercation occurred between a man and a woman, a boyfriend girlfriend," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Larry McKinnon.
They say Robertson was beating up girlfriend Cristy Vasilakos.
Neighbors say they heard the commotion.
Vickie Rock was visiting her boyfriend who lives next door to Vasilakos and also heard the noise.
Investigators said she didn't just listen, she decided to do something about it.
"She came outside armed with a 45 caliber. She ordered the man to stop, he at that point turned his aggression upon her and began severely beating her about the face with a metal object," said McKinnon.
That's when deputies say Rock shot Robertson.
"He died over there in the parking lot about 20 feet away," said Taylor.
People who live in the complex were shocked to see the heavy police presence and crime tape customary for an investigation like this.
They say this level of violence is rare in the quiet, tree lined community.
"It's really nice, it's a very quiet complex," said Taylor.
