Family seeks justice for man who died in NYPD raid

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Brooklyn family is outraged and demanding justice after their loved one dropped dead after the NYPD raided his apartment early Thursday morning.

43-year-old Carlos Alcis died from an apparent heart attack when police swarmed his apartment while searching for someone who mugged a woman. The woman said the mugger stole her cellphone at Kings Highway and Rockaway Parkway in the Brownsville section.

Relatives say police pried open Alcis apartment door because they thought his 16-year-old son Emmanuel committed the crime. Police say they were let in the apartment by Alcis.

Alcis collapsed during the raid and his family says police wouldn’t let anyone help him.

The family of Alcis, who is the father of eight, expressed their outrage during a meeting with Rev. Al Sharpton at the National Action Network Headquarters in Harlem.

“When my brother fell on the floor and my nephew Emmanuel said ‘Daddy’ they said, no, don’t approach him – everything’s going to be OK,” said Rudy Alcis.

According to the family, police asked Emmanuel to help perform mouth-to-mouth to his father and claim it took nearly 30 minutes for an ambulance to reach their, which is just blocks from Brookdale University Hospital.

The Alcis family and Sharpton are calling for a criminal investigation.

Mayor Bill de Blasio won't be reimbursing the city for personal travels that involve his security detail. "We have followed the conflict of interest board guidelines. I am following their guidelines to the letter," said de Blasio. The mayor has been heavily criticized for not paying the city back for travel expenses. Attention around the issue started last week when de Blasio was spotted not paying for a subway ride to Barclays Center while on official business.
