Warbirds over Tampa

Posted: Updated:

A hobby that's been around since the 1930s is turning grown men into little boys. Remote control planes are making a comeback in a big way, as you'll see in this segment of "What's Right With Tampa Bay."

"I truly love this," Steve Sciuga says.

Remote control planes soaring through the air bring back childhood memories for 76-year-old Eugene Garand. He's been playing with remote control planes for 48 years.

"I started about 5 or 6 years old," Eugene said. "I found a kit in the garage and started building and have been hooked ever since."

Eugene is president of Triple Creek Radio Control Club. They fly model planes. The club has been around for six years and they have 110 members.

"It's a great hobby, it's almost like golf. You're challenging yourself," Steve said.

The hobby comes in handy for Bob Marasco, who teaches Junior ROTC after he retired from the Air Force.

"When I talk about airplanes with the kids and they can actually see an airplane fly and take part in flying an airplane too," Bob said.

The club is open for all ages. Bob Brings his two kids Tommy, who is 12, and Alyssa, who is 14.

"It's a great time to spend with my son and my daughter," Bob said. "They are entering their tween years and anytime I can get with them in a common thing like flying, it's a great thing."

"You get to see a bunch of cool planes and meet new people," Tommy Marasco said.

"I wish more women would join because it's not an all men's thing," Alyssa Marasco said.

The graceful aircrafts are challenging to fly, but an experience these pilots love.

"I see guys flying a $75 plane with as big a smile on their face as the guy flying the $10,000 plane," Steve said.

A great way to enjoy the day.

"It's just a beautiful thing." Eugene said.

This weekend, the club has an event "Warbirds Over Tampa," which will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project.
