State's big gains in preschoolers health, weight

ATLANTA -

In 2009, the State of Georgia hired a dietician to work with preschools throughout the state to improve the overall health of students. And, years later, it appears the project is paying off.

A recently released report shows that Georgia preschoolers are slimming down.

After years of bad news regarding America children's waistlines, there's finally some good about news about the age group.

A report from the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed a slight decline in the number of obese preschoolers coming from low-income families. And, the State Department of Early Care & Learning credits the change with wellness training in childcare centers.

While 18 states showed the lowers numbers, too; it's states like Georgia, Florida and Missouri that saw the biggest declines. Officials working with the project say it isn't just the state policy that contributed to the decline, but also good health and wellness modeling by adults.

The CDC says a change in WIC policies probably played a role, too. The changes instituted in 2009 eliminated juice from infant food packages, provide less saturated fat and made it easier to buy fruits and vegetables.

The State of Georgia now rates childcare centers and nutrition is recently added as a component of that quality rating.
