TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A serious accident involving two cars caused a major backup on northbound I-75 Wednesday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver of a Cadillac was trying to change lanes when he hit the rear of a Chevy Cavalier.

Alejandro Pineda, 31, was in that Cavalier, and FHP officials said it lost control and rolled off the interstate.

Pineda was seriously injured and was airlifted from the scene.

The driver of the other car was not injured.

There were major delays, but the area has since been cleared.
