As FOX 13 first reported, the kidnapping drama began months earlier at a motel room in Louisiana, when police found Sharyn Hakken battered and bruised.
Now FOX 13 has obtained documents that show how that happened.
Investigators say Josh Hakken told them he beat his wife Sharyn to "bring her back to reality" because "spirits" would take over her body and talk through her. It was the only way, he said, to get the spirits to go away.
The documents also show he said he choked Sharyn to the point of unconsciousness to relieve her of the spirits.
These claims are troubling to Sharyn's defense attorney Bryant Camareno.
"The report seems to suggest that Mr. Hakken admitted to inflicting those injuries, so that's what I need to explore, why would he makes those statements," Camareno said.
But it was Sharyn's bizarre behavior that first got the attention of police, according to the documents. When officers got to the motel, they found her outside, yelling about being a ninja in the witness protection program, and how her brain had been reprogrammed.
Sharyn was taken to a psychiatric hospital to be evaluated. When police went to the motel room, they said they smelled marijuana and they found Josh Hakken inside the room.
"Mr. Hakken was allegedly passed out, laying on his back on the bed and the two little boys were just there, " explains his attorney Jorge Leon Chalela.
They also found a black lock box inside a diaper bag that they said contained marijuana, along with a large knife, which Joshua Hakken insisted on keeping, according to the report.
He said he didn't need money or possessions, just his family and the knife to complete his "ultimate objective": his journey to Armageddon.
He was arrested and his two boys taken into protective custody.
Based on some of this, Louisiana officials would eventually strip the Hakkens of their parental rights, setting off the chain of events that would involve kidnapping their kids and fleeing on a sailboat to Cuba.
