Elderly burglaries worry Chastain Park residents

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Residents around Atlanta's Chastain Park neighborhood are concerned over an increase in burglaries against elderly people.

Stickers posted in the neighborhood warn crooks to stay away, but it seems the bad guys aren't paying attention.

Carmen McCaffrey said she learned of the burglary of a 92-year-old woman from a neighborhood blog.

"She was away from her house on Saturday and they had taken a safe from her home," said McCaffrey.

McCaffrey's neighbor, Kevin Greene, is a member of the Chastain Park Civic Association. He says he's noticed a disturbing trend in the rash of daytime burglaries involving elderly residents.

"The last three or four that have happened, no one's been home, so how do they know they're not home. How do they know that they are older," asked Greene.

Now neighbors are talking to each other either face to face or on their blog, keeping themselves informed of potential problems, such as a sudden increase in door-to-door solicitations.

"You don't want to profile anyone. Maybe they really are selling magazines, but that's increased as of late," Greene said.

Greene said that in addition to the home burglaries, there has been an increase is car break-ins around the park playground.

McCaffrey and Greene say the civic association has hired its' own security to supplement police patrols, which they claim are infrequent. They encourage neighbors to join the association for less than $100 a year for security and peace of mind.
