Another haul for Tampa treasure hunters

Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration is working on another potentially valuable shipwreck off the coast of Ireland.

The SS Mantola was a British cargo ship sunk by the Germans during World War I. Odyssey says records show the Mantola was carrying tons of silver bullion.

The wreck of the Mantola lies about 100 miles from the wreck of the SS Gairsoppa. Odyssey recovered more than 100 tons of silver from that World War II-era freighter last month.

The two ships from two world wars were lost in what was a kill zone for decades.

"That is the path that the freighters were following," explained Odyssey's CEO, Greg Stemm. "There are hundreds of shipwrecks in that general area."

The Gairsoppa was about three miles beneath the surface of the North Atlantic. The Mantola is not quite as deep, at 2,500 meters. Still, Odyssey says the depth of the wreck will make it challenging to first find the silver inside the shipwreck, then lift tons of bars to the surface.
