New Year's resolutions are made to be broken. But Nicholas Cottrell of Winter Haven decided he was going to stick to his, and it's probably not a surprise: Cottrell vowed to drink a new beer every day of 2013.
So far, he has downed well over 200.
"I have drunk good stuff, not-so-good stuff, and learned a lot about the world of beer in general," Cottrell told FOX 13 the other day.
One of his biggest lessons was how many new brands of beer are popping up. Fresco's Bakery and Bistro in downtown Lakeland, where Cottrell like to taste test, has offered customers 300 new varieties in just the last year.
Some are fairly traditional; others are pretty far out.
"There is a donut company in New Orleans, I think it is New Orleans, called the Voodoo Donut Company, and they have teamed up with a rogue craft brewery to make maple, bacon, donut beer," said Rebecca Smith.
Smith is Cottrell's friend who may tag a long and take a sip so they can discuss the pros and cons of each new beer.
At the beginning of the year, Cottrell was posting reviews on his blog, www.newbeereveryday.com. Then his computer crashed. His friend gave him a new computer, and he thought he was back in business. But not for long. The second computer only lasted about a week before it stopped working.
It's no big deal to Cottrell.
"The resolution was not to write a blog post every day. It was to drink a new beer, and I have kept to that," he added.
