Hundreds show up for late-night debate on waterfront project

BRADENTON (FOX 13) -

A debate over a waterfront project in Manatee County kept people up into the early hours of Wednesday morning, as both sides discussed the proposal.

Nearly 1,000 people showed up to the Bradenton Convention center Tuesday night dressed in blue or green, depending on what side of the issue they were on.

Those in green were in support of the Long Bar Pointe project; those wearing blue were against the proposal.

Developers want to build a marina and a boardwalk with a hotel, convention center and restaurants on 523 acres along Sarasota Bay.

Opponents say the project could ruin the Bay.

More than 300 people spoke at the meeting, which didn't end until 3 a.m.

Commissioners voted 4-3 to approve a land use change from residential to mixed use, and they unanimously voted against an amendment that could have paved the way for developments along coastal waterways.
