A Charlotte County deputy was killed in the line of duty Monday night after responding to a domestic dispute.
It happened at the Lakes of Tuscana apartment complex in Port Charlotte.
Sergeant Mike Wilson was called to an apartment because of a report that 49-year-old Jay Vanko was beating his wife and son. He walked into the apartment, but never walked out.
"He made his way to the apartment where he was initially met with gunfire by the suspect," said Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell. "Because of the way the apartment is set up, there was only one staircase straight up, and basically it's a fatal funnel. We did not want to send other units up that staircase."
A robot was sent in, which confirmed that Vanko shot and killed himself after shooting Wilson.
Wilson was hit in the chest and the bullet went under his Kevlar vest. He died at the hospital.
His funeral is tentatively scheduled for Saturday.
"He was a good officer and will be missed," Sheriff Prummell said during a news conference.
Sgt. Wilson leaves behind a wife and three children.
Editor's note: The initial release from CCSO mis-identified Sgt. Wilson as a corporal. This story has been updated to reflect his correct rank.
