Wealthy Florida attorney John Morgan says he is leading a campaign to legalize medical marijuana in Florida because he believes it will help many people suffering in pain.
Morgan talked about his plan to the Tiger Bay Club in Tallahassee today.
He wants to get a proposed constitutional amendment legalizing prescription pot on the ballot in 2014.
Morgan, who's also former Gov. Charlie Crist's boss, says he's pushing the amendment because marijuana gave his father some relief when he was suffering from cancer before he died.
Morgan blasted Florida lawmakers for refusing to hear a bill on medical marijuana earlier this year.
So he decided to organize a citizens initiative to get the issue on the election ballot.
"Our government is broken. We all know that. We all know that. Our politicians are not here to help their constituents. They're here to win and get re-elected," Morgan said.
He added that he is pushing the amendment for his own peace of mind.
"The reason that I'm doing it is I'm looking for that peace. Because I know that service will give me peace and I know that the peace that I'm going to get from this service is going to give thousands of people who are hurt and sick and injured peace to the end of their lives."
Morgan's effort will have to get nearly 700,000 signatures to put the issue on the ballot next year.
