Rain washes out road in south Forsyth County

Posted: Updated:
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. -

Several hours of rain was too much for a state road in south Forsyth County.

The rain shut down two trails along the Big Creek Greenway and washed out part of State Road 371.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews had to shut down the road for several hours until they could shore of the road where a piece of the pavement had fallen into a creek.

Forsyth County Deputy Doug Rainwater says Wednesday's steady downpour caused the road to collapse from underneath.

"When all this water came rushing down last night from the rainfall, it started to erode the dirt, and consequently the two feet of asphalt," Rainwater said.

G-DOT crews were already on hand building a new turn lane into Vickery Middle School; Rainwater says the project won't be set back.

"Nothing's going to be set back. Thankfully, construction is already going on at this location. School starts next Thursday and this construction was going to be already continuing," said Rainwater.

Two trails on the Big Creek Greenway were also left underwater, while one on McFarland Parkway was closed.

Crews were able to repair the damage on SR 371 and get both lanes back open to traffic by rush hour on Thursday.
