The City of Lakeland's Human Resources Department must be a busy place. Another city employee has resigned in connection with a widening sex scandal. A black cloud that formed over the Lakeland Police Department and is now moving over the Lakeland Fire Department.
Fire Inspector David Bivens resigned on Thursday, rather than being fired. Bivens has been with the fire department 23 years and was most recently working as an inspector.
He is accused of having sex with Sue Eberle, the police crime analyst at the center of scandal. Investigators say their trysts took place in hotels, at the station during "Red, White and Ka-Boom" (Lakeland's Fourth of July celebration) and in the parking lot of the Lakeland Center during a service for a police officer shot in the line duty.
"It made me somewhat sick and disappointed that we would have one of our own even attempt to do the allegations, then admit they happened," Chief Gary Ballard told reporters.
Bivens joins nine other people who now no longer have jobs as a result of the scandal. So far, nine LPD employees, including high-ranking officers, have resigned or have been fired.
Lakeland's city manager just announced that six more city employees outside LPD are being investigated because of possible sexual ties to Eberle. No word when those investigations will be complete.
